May 18, 2011 – “American Rivers” name the Yuba River as one of America’s Top Ten Endangered Rivers in the United States.

May 18, 2011

A national nonprofit conservation group, American Rivers, has named the Yuba River number five on their top ten endangered rivers in the United States list.  The Yuba is on its list because the outdated Englebright Dam is preventing salmon recovery on the only major river draining the Sierra Nevada that still has wild runs.  Click on the link below to read the article from the Union newspaper in Nevada City.

A fish ladder to be built on Auburn Ravine, a creek in Placer County, to allow salmon and steelhead trout to bypass a Nevada Irrigation District measuring station could become a model for possible passage around Englebright Dam, NID officials said during a meeting in late April.

About American Rivers

John Kingsbury:

I met Chris Alford with American Rivers yesterday at a Sierra Nevada Workforce group meeting at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy in Auburn.  I had interest in their discussion on the proposed California Water Plan Update 2013 Regional overlay.

Chris is new to the organization, her office is based in Nevada City, and has interest in meadow restoration for the environment and additional storage.  I thought I would pass along some information about this organization, as well as, the link to their website. www.americanrivers.org/about-us/
